Karen has been in practice as a medical oncologist in Geelong for many years, originally arriving with her young family in 1995. She studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, graduating in 1986, achieving the Senior Medical Staff Award for the top student at the Austin Clinical school, the Neil Bromberger prize, the Max Kohane prize, and the Robert Gartly Healy prize. She went on to complete her physician training in 1993 and, after a year in Sydney, commenced practice in Geelong. Karen’s areas of special interest are in breast cancer, gynaecological and gastrointestinal malignancies. Karen is a senior consultant medical oncologist at University Hospital Geelong involved in clinics, multidisciplinary meetings and registrar training, and clinical trials.
Karen has a keen interest in the role of exercise in people with cancer, both for prevention and rehabilitation, and with nursing colleagues in 2010 established the inaugural oncology exercise program in Geelong STRIVE 2 THRIVE. She continues to encourage her patients to attend the Sunrise program via Barwon Health, or the St John of God oncology rehabilitation program, supporting and recognising the importance of physical activity in recovery from cancer treatments.
Karen considers herself a local (finally), is an avid runner and has run a number of marathons. She enjoys travel, exercise and singing karaoke (very badly)!!!
